Color Game

In the novel “the war between the classes” takes the “color game” place. In the following I will explain, what it is, what the idea behind is how it works.

There are four colors in the game. Orange, light green, dark green and blue. In that order they stands for the classes, the worst first. Besides the Colors, there are the G4s. They are a kind of a police. They check, if the players wears their armbands, which show the colors an if they behave how they should.
If they don't do, the G4s go to the teacher, Mr. Otero, and tells him who did what, so he can punish these people.
There is a special kind of money in then game. The Blues gets the most in the beginning, the Oranges less.
In the beginning of the game, Mr. Otero has cheated. These people, who re in real life rich, become an orange ore a light green, and these who have an other nationality or is very poor, become a Blue or a Dark green.
So the “Good” classes become the bad and the other way round.
The teacher wants to show the pupils, how it feels, to be the other class. It is such an other all day life.
The Blues plays the Game, how it should, because they like the power. But the Oranges and light greens, want to shut the game down.
This is how real life. The minorities don't want to life in that class life. They want that everyone is equal. And the Blues, so the upper classes, want the life how it is. In the Game it is just the same. The Blues have everything, and want to keep it and the Oranges don't have anything an want to change everything.

Relationship between Adam and Amy during the Color Game

Before the Color Game Amy and Adam trusted each other. They have thought, that nobody could separate them. But during the came they notice, that it is possible.
They want to have the same color, so they could be together anymore. But they got Blue and Orange, so they aren't allowed to meet each other. They want to get the same color. Adam wants to be promoted and Amy wants to be demoted.
But now, when Amy got the blue armband, she wants to keep it. That is the first time, where Amy is unsure what to do. (cf. p.34 l.5)
Amy tells Adam that she wants to play the Game how it should. “I'm going to try to stay a blue.” (p.39 l.20) she says to Adam. She started stuttering.
Adam do not like to hear it but after all he accepts Amy's decision, but although he is not satisfied.
You can see there that Amy does not do what Adam wants her, as she did before the game. She got self-confidence so that she can tell Adam her opinion and her own decision.
During the game, there is a Halloween dance, where she wanted to go with Adam. (cf. p. 41 ll.28-29) But because of the color Game it does not work. Brian asks Amy to go with him, what makes Adam very jealous. ““Bug off” Adam exclaimed. “She's my girl, Brian!”” He does not want Amy to go with him, but he has to notice that he cannot do anything against it.
All in all you can say, that the relationship between Amy an Adam has changed fundamentally. Before the Game Adam was over Amy. She did what he wanted her to do. But during the Game Amy notices that she can say her own opinion, and that she can tell Adam what she thinks, even if he does not want to hear.

Characterisation Emiko

Amy is a seventeen-year-old Japanese girl, who lives with her parents in America. Her real name is Emiko, but in school she is called Amy.
She has an older brother, Hideo, who is not still living a his parents' house. He lives together with his girlfriend.

Amy respects her parents very much. You can see it on page 15 in lines 21-22. When she got home too late, “her mouth went dry an fear tingled all through her”
Amy does not like how her parents treat her. In her opinion, they behave as she was a little girl. “I'm seventeen! What parents stay up until two o' clock waiting for their grown daughter to come home?” (p.16 ll. 7-9) In her thoughts you can see very clear, that she wants more freedom.
Amy has a boyfriend. His name is Adam. He is a Japanese boy, going in the same class as she does.
But her parents do not like him. They want Amy to have a Japanese boyfriend and not an American. Amy loves him very much. Her parents told her not to meet him any more, because she was too late home, an then “her throat tightened and tears sprang to her eyes”
There you can see that Adam means a lot to her, and that she does not want not to see him for even one day.

So all in all, Emiko is a girl, who loves her boyfriend very much, and her parents as well. But a girl, who is unhappy with her parents, because they threat her like she was twelve.
She does not like to be the centre of attention.
